When both your parent's have Alzheimer's

RENO, Nevada -

Pride Hansen is talking about his mom and dad. "Its a devastating thing because they've been so active and really sharp all their life," Both of his parents were diagnosed with Alzheimer's and dementia. and are living at 'Right At Home: Senior Care' and staffs are doing their part to help those families affected by Alzheimer's in the community.

His parents used to go fishing, camping and be out in the wild. They can't do that anymore. They've been together since the 7th grade so their bond has been stronger than they've ever been.

"They're together but it's like two little kids and they'll pick on each other and laugh together, which is good because they find the humor in things."

Bringing them a sense of normalcy is something is strives for everyday....along with a helping hand.

"It was the last couple years when the Alzheimer's started to kick in," Hansen explained. "The sad part about it is dad actually knows that he can't remember and it's frustrating for him."

One of the caregiver says, " It definitely weighs down on your heart, what I personally do is call my supervisor and ask for a day off and my supervisor and staff are understanding. Good communication is key in that role because we all need a break."

That's why the need to help the community is so strong for 'Right At Home'.

"So if we can help make that easier for patients with Alzheimer's , that's ultimately what we're looking for. We want to make the family feel comfortable as well as the patients."

In the end it's all about showing compassion and understanding and making those with Alzheimer feel comfortable in every stage of life.

"My dad has Alzheimer's and my mom is the sole caregiver. We've done it for 13 years here but when you have to deal with it totally different," "It amplifies everything you've done before."

For now, Hansen said it's all about taking it one day at a time.

"They're 87 and 88 years old, they're chugging along, I'm grateful for that."
